The Week In Review!

What a busy week it's been! So many exciting things took place that I have to share with you. Sorry for the super long (and late) post but I dare not leave anything out and there's so much goodness to see!

To kick it off, I attended a Sip n' See for SoReece Jewelry. This jewelry line is absolutely fabulous! Each piece is handmade and crafted by Jewelry Designer Sonya Reece. She was a delight and an awesome host. Sips, Bites and Bling...I mean, what could be better??!!

***
Next up was The Brandish Dallas and my good friend Karie, Owner & Designer of Island Time Fragrances joined me for the event. This event highlighted some of the new and upcoming brands in fashion, beauty and lifestyle. The night was super fun! We walked from table to table, testing and sampling some of the new offerings in Dallas. I was excited to learn that Brandish was a mini version of an even larger event planned for July 29th called The Weekender Dallas. I'm definitely adding it to the calendar!

Fun-filled evening with Karie, Fine Artist Melissa Ellis and Jenn Sprinkle, City Leader for CRAVE Dallas. If you're a female entrepreneur and you don't know about CRAVE then you really should check it out. It's a great way to connect with successful business owners to learn helpful ways to improve and boost your own business.

You must also check out Fashion Designer Edgar Gomez! His designs are beyond glamourous. There were models wearing his creations which are very girly and elegant but have a bit of an edge. It reminded me of old Hollywood but with a modern twist. So talented!

***
The week's finale was TOOTSIES Dallas Bloggers Competition with Tamara, Owner & Designer of SewSewFunky and Karie. Okay...sooooo much fun!!

Here we are with the winner Jen Smith of Blank White Frames. She's so cute! Her personal style blog beat out some stiff competition. A list of the Bloggers and their sites are here The ladies looked great as they modeled their own TOOTSIES look in a runway fashion show. We shopped, drank wine, mingled and had way too much cheese. Fun times.

Well that's it! The week is over and now it's time for some rest and relaxation. Enjoy your weekend and I'll see you next week before my mini-vacay in SAVANNAH!! Whoo hoo! I am beyond excited. If you remember, Savannah, GA is one of my favorite places. I'll be sure to have tons of pictures and sights to share with you.

Until then.

IN THEATERS: Beasts of the Southern Wild

I remember hearing the buzz from Sundance and Cannes about the independent film Beasts of the Southern Wild. The story and extremely cute lead character instantly grabbled my attention. Well Beasts of the Southern Wild is finally here! Opening this week in New York and Los Angeles with most major cities following in July.

The film takes place from the magical viewpoint of the six year old heroine, Hushpuppy, in a secluded bayou area on the southernmost tip of Louisiana. She's faced with her father's failing health as she fights for survival in the wake of a Katrina-like storm. Her world of myths and wonders is filled with wild animals, both real and imaginary.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this film. Being from Louisiana, it seems to really capture the spirit, culture and resilience of the people there. I love that director Benh Zeitlin (his first feature film!) used nonactors and natives to South Louisiana. Zeitlin discovered a gem in little Quvenzhané Wallis, the New York Times says she's "an untrained sprite who holds the camera’s attention with a charismatic poise that might make grown-up movie stars weep in envy". Now that is awesome!

Check out the trailer below.

Refinery29: How To Collect Art

During my early morning blog reading, I came across Refinery29 DC's article about art collecting. Not only did I think it was a great, informative read but I was delighted to see that Andrea Pippins from Fly is featured. Art is the finishing touch to a well-designed room but a lot of us struggle when choosing and displaying art. These three art pros offer great advice on adding art to your space.

Check out the article here featuring blogger Meg Biram, art enthusiast Philippa P. B. Hughes, and Andrea Pippins, graphic designer, professor, and blogger at Fly.

via Planet Deco

I am in love with this space! It's a perfect blend of vintage and modern while the pops of color add just the right amount of wow. It's fun and playful but sophisticated at the same time. Such a great example of how to mix the old and new without taking it too seriously. This space gets an A+ in my book. Bravo!

What do you think of the color combinations? Are you adventurous enough to mix styles? Do you have a hard time mixing vintage and modern decor? Let me know your thoughts!

I'm Featured on FLY GIRL BLOG!!

I'm beyond excited! {SCREAMING!!} I'm a huge fan of Fly so to be the Fly Girl Of The Week is a huge honor! I hope my words will inspire someone on their journey. A huge thanks to Andrea for featuring me! :-) Go on over to Fly and check it out!

FGOTW

Fly is undergoing some changes and updates with new features and content but the one thing that won't be included in those updates is the Fly Girl of the Week feature. So to honor one of my favorite features that made Fly what it is today I'd like to share some fabulous final Fly Girls of the Week :). Enjoy!

Fg205

Who? My name is Angela and I'm a proud 36!

Where? I'm a Louisiana girl that has lived in Brooklyn, NY and currently lives in Dallas, TX

What do you do?
Oh I've done it all! I definitely don't believe in the "Jack of all trades, Master of none" saying. I've been blessed to have many careers. Television production and styling, graphic design and interior decorating to name a few. Currently I'm a full time graphic designer and on the side I produce home decor products, refinished furniture, and handmade items for my little shop Boutique La Bohéme located in Frisco, TX. It allows me to combine all of my creative talents into one space. You can also find my blog on my website where I talk about everything from art, design, interiors, fashion and travel. My hope is to expand Boutique La Bohéme in the future to a full size boutique.

What inspires you?

Music, people, life...everything around me inspires me. I try to just be still at one point during the day and take in my surroundings. You'll be surprised at what you see once you really pay attention.

Why are you fly?
I'm fly because I continue to challenge myself. I think life is about growing as a person and you must continue to challenge your intellect and creativity on a daily basis. I'm also fly because I'm happy. You only have one life and I plan to enjoy every bit of it!

Advice:
If you're a creative, embrace it. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't make a living doing what you love. I've had many teachers, peers, family, etc. that tried to mold me into a "normal" professional with a 9-5 job. That's not a bad thing, but I had to find my own way and realize
that's it's okay to be me. If I wake up today and want to paint a portrait or tomorrow and want to refinish furniture, it's all okay as long as I'm happy and progressing in my creativity. You are unique and awesome and it's okay to be you!

#NOWPLAYING: Meleni Smith

It's FRIDAY and time for new music!

If you haven't heard of Meleni Smith, let me be the first to introduce you. Meleni is a true artist. Not only is she an incredibly gifted singer but she's a successful songwriter as well. Alicia Keys recorded her song “Love is My Disease" on her album, “Element of Freedom”. I love the soulful emotion in her voice. If I'm having a moment (as we sometimes do), I definitely add one of her records to the playlist. The lady has serious vocal skills. I can't wait to see where her career takes her.

Check out her latest album "My Heart In Focus" here

Enjoy and Have a Great Weekend!

This is by far my favorite single from the album. It's magical!

Furniture Designer: Azadeh Shladovsky

Los Angeles-based designer Azadeh Shladovsky imbues organic materials and forms with a sleek glamour all her own... via Elle Decor

I love Azadeh's style! The materials are rough and organic but she's completely transformed them. Each piece is sassy and glamourous! Truly works of art.

Solange Does Glamour France

Ok I promise not post about Solange for a while lol...but she is working it something fierce for the July issue of Glamour France. Check out the complete spread here

Designer Profile: Ozwald Boateng

Recently, a friend posted the cover of the current (and first) issue of GQ Style South Africa on their Facebook page. I wasn't familiar with the designer on the cover, but I can recognize a well-tailored suit from a mile away. The man wearing the stunning emerald green suit is Ozwald Boateng, the menswear genius widely credited for introducing Savile Row tailoring to a new generation.

Savile Row is a shopping street in Mayfair, central London, known for it's high quality tailors and the bespoke "be spoken for" suit. Fully handmade and made to order, the traditions of Savile Row date back to 1846. In 1994, at the age of 27, Ozwald became both the youngest and first black tailor to open a store on Savile Row.

Ozwald has built an empire and now tailors to a host of A-Listers including Giorgio Armani, Jamie Foxx, Ryan Seacrest, Richard Branson and Will Smith.

Learn more about Ozwald and peek inside the inaugural issue of GQ South Africa here

Also, check out the documentary A Man's Story. The film spans 12 years of the designers' life and career from 1998-2010. I definitely will be checking this out!

FABULOUS FINDS: Bloom Theory

via Get Togetha

It seems that everyone is toting around a DSLR camera these days. What a cute way to
set yourself apart from the rest! So cute!

different: bloom theory

While I can shamefully admit to being reduced to using my Iphone for “the shot” (just imagine my sad face); my 35MM film cameras are still my sentimental pride and joy as they suffer from invalidation and relic neglect. Thought these camera straps by Bloom Theory were cuteola…a little pageant-y….but cute nevertheless.

Target Style + Vashtie Kola

"Downtown Sweetheart" Vashtie Kola is a Target Style Guest Editor for the month of June!

I've been a fan of Vashtie for a while now. As a person who does her best to manage multiple creative projects at once, it's inspiring to see someone who does that well. Vashtie has directed music videos for such artists as Justin Bieber and Solange, she DJs parties, has her own clothing line Violette New York, she hosts the legendary "1992" party in New York City and she's the first female designer for Nike Air Jordan. She is the ultimate entrepreneur PLUS she has loads of style!

I'm loving her picks for June, they're fun, bright, trendy and perfect for the summer. Also, each of the looks were inspired by a song. Check out Vashtie and fellow New York City DJ Harley Viera-Newton
for their favorite summer jams and fashion picks here

Don't you just love Target?! They get an A+ for Fashion & Style yet again!!

French Twist

My grandmother's living room was a masterpiece. It was filled with beautiful french style furniture with ornate, intricate designs. It was a classic sitting room that was only used to receive visitors. We NEVER lounged around in that room! As a child I would walk through the dining room into the living room and just stare because to me it seemed so luxurious. I was so excited recently when my family gave me one of my grandmother's chairs.
Check out this beauty.

So to make it my own I've been researching ideas for fabrics and finishes. Of course, for me, I'd like to do something nontraditional and really make this chair the star of the room. Here are some great inspiration pieces I've found.

This Louis IX style chair was used at a Kips Bay Decorator Show House. It's a flea market find that was upholstered in an African Mud Cloth. I don't think I ever would have thought of this. How fabulous and interesting is this chair?! Love it!

This French provincial armchair by Back Alley Furniture is beyond words. It's upholstered in a turquoise and white ikat damask fabric and refinished in cream. It's so fresh and feminine.

I found this Bergere Armchair in the Etsy store WildChairy. The bright colorful floral and polka dot fabric is so fun! I love how they used two different fabrics on the chair, it definitely makes it more interesting. They used a dark stain on the wood but I think I'm leaning towards painting my chair white. We shall see!

***

I hope these lovelies inspire you to do something unexpected with your furniture, especially if the style is more traditional. Modern fabrics and colors can really liven up an older piece and make it current. I can't wait to show you how my chair turns out. I'll be sure to post pics!

DIY Fun: Gilded Candle Holders

I came across this fun DIY project from one of my favorite blogs chevrons & eclairs. It was so easy! What a great way to add some pizzazz to clear votives. Check out my end result after the post.

live to create : gilded candle holders

Happy Monday, friends! I thought I would start the week with a big bang and give you a fun DIY post.
It has been too long since I've given you any crafting projects, so here it is. I am excited about this week
because of The Art to Inspiration Project launch [if you're interested, just comment below], and also
excited for next week as I'm dedicating the blog to lots of fun things for Valentines Day!

* * *

After seeing these, I wanted to get my hands on something gilded. It makes me feel glamorous and what better way than to make it myself? I have so many glass candle holders and other votives laying around my home. It doesn't hurt to try it out. It came out perfectly! Have you gilded anything? Please share if you have any gilded tutorials.

You will need: Ziploc bag[s] or plastic bag[s], masking tape, gold metallic spray paint that can be used on indoor products, and your candle holders. Keep in mind, you don't have to use holders, you can use other things.

{1} Make sure the holder is clean and dust free. If you don't clean, the gold paint will not go on smoothly.
{2} Run the tape according to your desired style/pattern.
{3} Wrap the entire area that you don't want gold with plastic and run tape along the edges of the plastic.

{1} Make sure you work in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors. Layout old newspapers.
{2} To remove the stickers, use Goo-Gone, can be found at your local hardware store.
{3} For me, I wanted the bottoms to be gilded, so I placed the holders upside down.
{4} Make sure you do 2-3 coats to get an even coat.

And voila! You can use them anywhere around
the house. I placed candles in these, and will eventually
use them to place my baubles and make up.
Place some pens, pencils and hi-lighters in your
office. I would probably love giving these things
away as party favors after a girls night filled with
a candle, bath salts and lavender oil. I might end
up gilding everything in my house actually...

Just thought you might be interested,
Camille Styles' has a great gilded business card
idea here!

Or you can try this gilded bauble plate!

Remember, if you have gilded something or plan
on it in the near future, share with us here.
Would love to see what you have thought of.

*Drumroll* Here's how mine turned out! Instead, I used Gloss Enamels Metallic Paint in Glorious Gold
to give it a more brushed look. I think I'll definitely go with the metallic spray paint next time for
a more professional look. If you try this DIY project, please send pics. I'd love to see how yours turned out.

Ms. Genevieve Jones

From the Bayou to the Big Apple, fellow Louisianian, Genevieve Jones has taken New York City by storm. She arrived in New York in 1999 and overnight became the socialite to watch on the fashion scene. Her style is effortless, classic and a little bit quirky. She was dubbed the "Girl of the Moment" in the March 2006 issue of Vogue and has been a muse to several fashion designers like Zac Posen.
